our story

The Hive Salon LLC, est. 2022

The Hive Salon was founded by Marysa and Dakota in 2022 to disrupt the status quo in the salon industry. We envisioned an environment where stylists feel safe to express their creativity and passion in a business model focused on livable wages and employee wellness.

The name, '“The Hive Salon,” is Marysa’s brain child. A few years ago, we were chatting about what each of our dream salons would look like. Our visions aligned perfectly, and Marysa shared her idea of “The Hive.” Dakota also has a love of bees (and has a bee tattoo!) so the name stuck.

The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on the health risks and financial needs of service industry workers, as well as the serious need for work-life balance. Hair stylists and cosmetologists are historically one of the least-insured groups in the United States workforce. By offering employer-based accident and injury insurance, we will encourage our employees to take care of their physical and mental wellness so they can focus on their passions at work and give them the energy for family and personal lives. We also offer retirement benefits.

The Hive Salon is a dedicated Safe Space for queer folks. We are members of The Dresscode Project, a global alliance of salons & barbershops committed to providing positive, gender-affirming services for LGBTQIA2S+ clients. We are proud to have a gender-free service menu and an all-gender bathroom.

As members of the Lawrence Women’s Network and Chamber of Commerce, we prioritize community involvement and leadership. We see our salon as a space for lifetime career stylists and new stylists alike; we have a stylist training program for newly licensed stylists to hone their skills and build a clientele.

We are passionate about doing our part for our planet and erasing our carbon footprint in an industry that produces a lot of waste. All of our services include a $2 eco-fee, which is used to offset the cost of our Green Circle Salon certification. We are able to reclaim and recycle up to 95% of our beauty waste through this program, including hair clippings, highlight foils, excess hair color, and all recyclables! By 2025, we will be a carbon-neutral salon! Ask you stylist for more information, or see the Green Circle Salons website.
